Posted on: October 31st, 2008 Discrimination with Samuel L. Jackson: No on Prop 8

This morning’s Field Poll carries news that Prop 8 is narrowly losing, 44 to 49%.This initiative battle is razor thin. We know that 7 to 10% of voters are still up for grabs. And Tim Gill and Scott Miller will match your donation up to $100,000 if you respond NOW.We knew we needed something more. Something big. Something to remind California voters that there were times in our history when we did not stand up against discrimination, and these are times we now regret. So our new ad — which we call “History” — focuses on the central fact of this campaign: it is wrong to discriminate and wrong to treat people differently under the law. This new ad, narrated by renowned actor Samuel L. Jackson, drives home the message that discrimination is always wrong. Watch the ad and make a donation to keep it on the air.Now it’s our turn. It’s our turn to make sure we do everything we can do so the next generation grows up in a more decent society — a society where discrimination against LGBT Americans remains part of that sorry past rather than enshrined in our Constitution. We must keep this ad on television statewide through Election Day. To make that happen we must raise at least $1.5 million today. Please donate NOW.With your help, we will defeat Prop 8. Please continue your support with a donation and ask the people who care for you to do the same.In solidarity,

Posted on: October 31st, 2008 The PETA Files: Terminate Cruelty–Vote ‘Yes!’ on Prop 2!

If you live in California—or even if you don’t!—you’ve probably heard all about Prop 2, the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act. Prop 2 concerns a law that would take effect in 2015 to eliminate veal crates, gestation crates, and battery cages in California. In other words, calves, sows, and hens would finally be given enough space to simply turn around, lie down, and stretch their limbs.Continued:http://blog.peta.org/archives/2008/10/terminate_cruel.php

LOS ANGELES, Oct 27, 2008 — Twentieth Century Fox’s upcoming romantic adventure Australia and Metacafe are joining forces to launch “The Thirty-Second Film Contest” on October 24. The contest challenges aspiring film editors to use materials from the film as well as their own creative “spin” — including visual effects, music, and voice-over — to put together a thirty-second spot for the film. (www.metacafe.com/australiacontest)

The launch of “The Thirty-Second Film Contest” coincides with the release of a production video featuring director Baz Luhrmann discussing the editing process on Australia. Luhrmann, the Oscar-nominated director of Moulin Rouge! and William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, collaborated with editors Dody Dorn (Kingdom of Heaven, Memento) and Michael McCusker (3:10 to Yuma, Walk the Line) to turn 2.5 million feet of raw footage into the finished film, which opens in theaters everywhere November 26. Twentieth Century Fox and Bazmark Production will select the winning submission, which will be featured on the film’s DVD release. The winner will also receive a trip to Australia courtesy of Qantas Airways and Tourism Australia, and a trip to New York to meet Baz Luhrmann at a special event and attend a private screening of Australia. The production video is part of a series of ten videos designed to educate and inspire high school and college filmmakers, taking them behind the scenes of Australia, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman — and inside the creative process of Luhrmann and his production team.

The previously released videos focus on Australia’s costume design, on-set photography, cinematography, production design and more — and can be viewed at australiamovie.com/behindthescenes.

About Australia: Australia is an epic and romantic action adventure, set in that country on the explosive brink of World War II. In it, an English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman) travels to the faraway continent, where she meets a rough-hewn local (Hugh Jackman) and reluctantly agrees to join forces with him to save the land she inherited. Together, they embark upon a transforming journey across hundreds of miles of the world’s most beautiful yet unforgiving terrain, only to still face the bombing of the city of Darwin by the Japanese forces that attacked Pearl Harbor. With his new film, Luhrmann is painting on a vast canvas, creating a cinematic experience that brings together romance, drama, adventure and spectacle. www.metacafe.com

Futurists predict a bull market for escapism

Bad economic times are good times for the entertainment industry. Superheroes to the rescue!

By Rachel Abramowitz, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

October 1, 2008

GIVEN that the economy is cratering, the lead in the presidential polls keeps seesawing and I’m trying to restrain myself from going online every 15 minutes to check the news, I thought now would be a good time to call a futurist to see what else could be coming down the pike.

OK, I’d prefer to ask a psychic or an astrologer, but some would say they have less credibility. A futurist — sometimes called a trend spotter — at least predicts, for instance, how the current financial collapse is going to reverberate through the culture, changing how we think, mate, live and buy, and most back up their pronouncements with market research.

Posted on: October 31st, 2008 ACHTENBLOG: New Tools for the Indie Filmmaker

Rob Mills sent me a link to the new Canon Digital SLR (EOS 5D Mark II) that is capable of 1080p video at 30 frames per second. What is amazing about this camera is that it uses a 21 megapixel sensor and it gives a filmmaker access to the entire lineup of Canon compatible lenses. The camera isn’t perfect and there are complaints that the video runs at 30 fps instead of 24 and it writes the video with H.264 compression (it isn’t uncompressed or Raw like the actual photographs). This may be so but many people don’t understand the importance of the lens. If you have a cheap lens you’ll get a cheap picture. Garbage in, garbage out.Continued:http://achtenblog.blogspot.com/2008/10/new-tools-for-indie-filmmaker.html

Posted on: October 30th, 2008 Bollywood Calling!

India is not just a country of 1 billion people but it is also a country that loves movies. And we make a lot of them. Nearly 800 or so every year. Now, that kind of output rivals even Hollywood. Increasingly, Bollywood – as the mainstream Indian film industry is popularly known – is reaching out to not just Indian audiences and the Indian diaspora but to global movie buffs. Sure, the cinematic experience may be different from that offered in Hollywood-crafted movies but our films are finding avid viewers in the US, UK, Germany and Switzerland besides countries in the developing world.

Everyone loves a good story. More so, if you’re a screenwriter like I. And now for a new opportunity that is waiting to be explored. While Hollywood attracts anything between 40 and 50,000 new screenplays every year, Bollywood – with its vast output of films every year – is facing a virtual drought of good screenplays and screenwriters. Filmmakers in Mumbai, the home of Bollywood films, are experimenting with new genres of storytelling and not just the typical “masala” movies {read: lots of songs-and-dances and fanciful storylines} that are synonymous with mainstream Bollywood. There is a whole new movement towards cross-over films that can work across cultures and countries. Many of these filmmakers are experimenting with different techniques of story telling, with amazing results. With new and shiny multiplexes opening their doors in Indian cities, movie makers have plenty of opportunities to screen their films – including short films, documentaries and features.

Not surprisingly, Bollywood has begun to attract film talent from across the world. Cinematographers from Korea, Australia and Spain are being hired as crew for Bollywood movies. And international co-productions are on the rise. Recently, one of the biggest corporate groups in India, Reliance, entered into a financing deal with top productions houses in Los Angeles. Acknowledging the growing presence of Indian movies in the world market, the UK government has put in place a co-production treaty. Films made under the treaty benefit in a number of ways: possible funding from the UK Film Council, marketing support at international festivals and increased access to EU markets and TV. It would also enable independent filmmakers in India to access the new UK tax relief – which is touted as one of the most generous and competitive tax reliefs in the world. Besides with the exchange of talent between the two industries, it promises to be a win-win situation for both. This is one party that’s only going to get better and bigger!

Adite Banerjie is a screenwriter who lives in New Delhi, India.
